The Heart of the Community Awards Program, sponsored by the Volunteer Center is designed to represent the spirit and tradition of community service. It recognizes community service by youth, adults, youth groups, adult groups and corporate volunteers.
Awards will be presented in five categories:
The Volunteer Center of Morgan County with event sponsor, Senator Arthur Orr, held the Twenty-Fourth Annual Volunteer of the Year “Heart of the Community” Awards on Tuesday, October 30, 2007. The awards presentation and reception was held at Cedar Ridge Middle School. A reception followed the award presentation.
All of the 22 nominees were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community.

Youth Individual:

Adult Individual:
Wanda Daniels, Norma J. Melder, Gina Moffitt, Carolyn Brackin Orr, Charles Reid, Sandra Shepard, Diana Sparkman, Donna Stallions, and Cheryl Watkins.
Adult Group:
American Legion Post 15 Auxillary, Rock Creek Homemakers Club, and St. Luke United Methodist Church.
Partner in Community:
United Launch Alliance- Decatur Employee Volunteer Association (DEVA)
Lifetime Achievement:
Decatur General Hospital Boot Scooters, Decatur General Hospital Lifeline Volunteers, Decatur Music Club, Jimmy Smith, Linda Guyton’s Hartselle First United Methodist Volunteer Group, Winnie Reed, Dennis Roberson and Estelle Smith.
Senator Arthur Orr, Elise Morgan of NewsChannel 19, Dr. Larry Little, Chairman John Glasscock, and president of the Volunteer Center Board of Directors, Chuck Ard presented special awards to the following individuals:
Youth Individual: Rosalind Boonarkat, Volunteer for Alacare Home Health and Hospice
Adult Individual: Charles Reid volunteer for Morgan/Lawrence Chapter of American Red Cross
Adult Group: Rock Creek Homemakers Club, Nominated by Carol Potts
Partner in Community: United Launch Alliance- Decatur Employee Volunteer Association (DEVA), Nominated by Betsy Anthony
Lifetime Achievement: Dennis Roberson, volunteer for Morgan County Rescue Squad and Estelle Smith, Volunteer for American Legion Auxillary
The winners received a plaque and a $500 donation for the organization where they volunteer from Senator Arthur Orr.
Panel of judges included: Dr. Larry Little, Joel Gilliam, Catherine Halbrooks, Dr. George Hansberry, Linda McClain, and Karen Stacy.
2007 Daily Points of Light Winners
More than 61 million people in this country volunteer their time, talent and energy to help others, solve social problems and build strong communities. These volunteers represent all backgrounds and beliefs and range in age from 5-95, but share the common goal of working to make a difference.
The awards and recognition programs of the Points of Light Foundation celebrate the success of these volunteers and spotlight the impact that various individuals, groups, businesses and families have made in their communities.
