Reading is Fundamental
Reading Is Fundamental

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. prepares and motivates children

to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most.

Founded in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States. RIF programs annually serve 5.1 million children of all ages, most of whom are at

risk of educational failure, with a focus on those from birth to age 11.

Program Components:

  • Books for ownership: Children have the opportunity to choose and keep two to five books per year at no cost to the children or their families.

  • Fun literacy-related activities: Reading really is FUNdamental in the RIF National Book Program. Volunteers motivate children to read with a myriad of festive book activities that accompany each book event.

  • Family and community involvement: RIF headquarters provides training and technical assistance to enable volunteer program coordinators at each site to recruit and train additional volunteers, who help run their NBP.

About RIF

RIF programs offer enriching activities that spark children's interest in reading. And every child involved with RIF gets to choose and keep new books, at no cost to the children or their families.
In Morgan County, three elementary schools, Falkville, Sparkman and Woodmeade are sponsored by Volunteer Center of Morgan County.  One thousand children received three books during the three distribution days.

Get Involved
Volunteers are needed to assist with book selection, distribution day motivational activities and providing refreshments and small fun
items such as bookmarks or stickers.
